In this lecture we look at different methods for processing the geometry of 3D surfaces. This lecture covers parts of the former Computer Graphics II lecture, concentrating on the topics related to the processing of geometry.
To obtain a nice-looking 3D surface of a real-world object, methods of geometry processing are needed all along the pipeline. Point data from 3D scanners first needs to be triangulated. Using methods of mesh optimization, the original triangle mesh can then be improved (smooth away noise, reduce complexity, etc.) Also, approaches to model and modify meshes are treated as well as parametrization techniques needed for texturing for example. Finally, methods for the efficient compression, storage, and transmission of polygonal meshes are discussed.
