Aachen

Aachen is the westmost city of Germany, located close to the Netherlands and Belgium. Fire stones and cairns bear witness that the Aachen region was colonized as soon as 2700 BC. In particular the Celts and later on the Romans enjoyed the healing powers of its thermal springs. However, it was not until 800 AD that Aachen became the residence of Charlemagne and the center of the Carolingian renaissance. From then on it developed into a European metropolis, being the place of coronation of 30 German kings.

Nowadays Aachen is famous for its Cathedral, the technical university (RWTH), the Karlspreis (Charlemagne Award), the international dressage, jumping and riding tournament CHIO and its thermal springs.

By plane

The following airports are in short distance to Aachen: From each of these airports Aachen can conveniently be reached by train. In particular there is a direct high-speed connection (ICE) from Frankfurt airport to Aachen (1.5 hours). Furthermore, the Airport-Aixpress is a direct airport bus service between Aachen and Düsseldorf or Cologne/Bonn Airports. The shuttle service is running between Aachen and Düsseldorf 12 times a day and between Aachen and Cologne 4 times a day. The journey takes 60 minutes (90 minutes between 6.00 - 9.00 and 16.00 - 18.00 o'clock).
